Symptoms
Painless swelling (lump) in the breast or the armpit region
Nipple retraction
Nipple discharge
Change in size and shape of the breast and the nipples
Change in the look of the skin surrounding the nipples and the breast region, looking reddish in colour
Usually, the early stage of breast cancer does not cause any symptoms. Thus, regular breast exams by a surgeon are important to detect any change taking place in the breasts, which may later turn into cancer. Various factors trigger the occurrence of breast cancer. These include late age at first childbirth, fewer children and shorter duration of breast-feeding. In addition, early age at menarche and late age at menopause add to the risk to some extent. If a female has had a family history of breast cancer then the chance that she may have the cancer too increases 2-3 times.
Breast Self-Examination (BSE)
BSE is a method of finding abnormalities of the breast, for early detection of breast cancer. The method involves the woman herself looking at and feeling each breast for possible lumps, distortions or swelling.
Most methods suggest that the woman stand in front of a mirror with the torso exposed to view. She looks in the mirror for visual signs of dimpling, swelling, or redness on or near the breasts. This is usually repeated in several positions, such as while having hands on the hips, and then again with arms held overhead.
The woman then palpates her breasts with the pads of her fingers to feel for lumps (either superficial or deeper in tissue) or soreness. There are several common patterns, which are designed to ensure complete coverage. The vertical strip pattern involves moving the fingers up and down over the breast.
The pie-wedge pattern starts at the nipple and moves outward. The circular pattern involves moving the fingers in concentric circles from the nipple outward.
TREATMENT
Once a diagnosis is made, we discuss treatment options with the patient. Treatment options may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery and innovative treatment options available through clinical trials.
The various treatment options include:
Lumpectomy: wherein the breast lump with a rim of surrounding breast tissue is removed
Mastectomy: removes whole or most of the breast and possible nearby structures.
Chemotherapy: medicines to kill cancer cells
Radiation therapy
Hormonal Treatment and targeted therapy
Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM)
A Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM) is done at Vardaan hospital .Sometimes there is need to removal of the breast, in that case we do it with reconstructive Surgery. it is the removel of the whole breast and most of the lymph nodes under the arm (axillary nodes). Removal of these lymph nodes is called an axillary dissection. This is the standard surgery for the IBC breast.
Many Procedures of Modified Redical Mastectomy along with
axillary dissection .Some of which belong to locally advanced cases of
Carcinoma
Breast .
At Vardaan Hospital, various breast cancer surgeries are performed by well qualified surgeons & with best quality equipment’s.
