What is the Gallbladder ?

The Gallbladder is a small pear shaped sac attached to the underside of the liver. It is in the upper right hand side of the belly, underneath the ribs. It is a storage area for a digestive fluid called bile. The gallbladder stores bile between meals, and releases it into the stomach after meals to help with digestion; particularly digestion of fats and oils.
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Instead of an incision over the gallbladder area, there is a small incision by the belly button, and three smaller incisions near the gallbladder. A viewing scope attached to a video monitor is inserted through the belly button incision. Various other instruments are inserted through the other incisions to remove the gallbladder. This operation has less postoperative discomfort, and is done with a very short hospital stay than the open Cholecystectomy.

Advantages

There are a number of advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure. These include:
Reduced hemorrhaging, which reduces the chance of needing a blood transfusio Smaller incision, which reduces pain and shortens recovery time, as well as resulting in less post-operative scarring.
Less pain, leading to less pain medication needed.
Although procedure times are usually slightly longer, hospital stay is less, and often with a same day discharge which leads to a faster return to everyday living.
Reduced exposure of internal organs to possible external contaminants thereby reduced risk of acquiring infections

Why It Is Done.
